CPE At The Kano Education Recovery Conference 2024
The Kano Education Recovery Conference was held on the 10th & 11th of July, 2024 at Dangote Business School, Bayero University Kano State and was themed; Repositioning Education In Kano State: Navigating The Path To Excellence.
The 2-day event was organised by By Kano State Government In Collaboration With FCDO PLANE and Arewa Consultative Forum At Dangote Business School, Bayero University, Kano.
The Concerned Parents and Educators Initiative (CPE), was represented at the conference by National Coordinator Mrs Kemi Koleowo and one of CPE’s Lagos state coordinators Mrs Bunmi Adewakun.
The conference welcomed participants that were drawn from Federal and State Government Officials; Civil Society and Community Representatives: People with Disability (PWD), NGOs and Community leaders in Kano; Development Partners: Representatives from international organizations; Private Sector: Stakeholders from educational technology and infrastructure companies; Youths and Selected Students from Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions; Teachers and Educators; School Administrators and Principals; Parents; Traditional and Religious Leaders; Educational Consultants and Researchers.
Day-1 and 2, of the conference featured quite a number of speakers and paper presentations both physically and online such as: Professor Rukayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, OON, former Minister of Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who gave the keynote address speaking extensively on the present state of Kano education and the need to reposition it for a better future for the children, the Chairman of Arewa Consultative forum, the Deputy British High Commissioner’s speech Dr. Aliyu Tilde Former Commissioner of Education Bauchi State, Prof Aisha Abdul Isma’il, BUK, Emily Koester Technical Advisor PLANE, Rudolph Ampofo Mastercard Global Engagement Lead, Africa & Ghana Lead, Nafisa Ado Senior Technical Assistance and Learning Advisor USAID LEARN to Read, Zakariya Zakari, and FCDO DELVe, Dr. Stephen Onyekwelu, Literacy Focal Point, UNESCO.
They all discussed strategies to revitalize the education sector in the state, and the support they were ready to make available to partner with Kano State government on her education recovery journey.
The Governor of Kano State, His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, declared the conference open with his inaugural speech where he spoke about how his government had put in place an action plan to save the education system of the state and how they plan to execute these plans through partnerships with willing donor agencies and development partners.

On the 2nd day of the conference, one of CPE’s Lagos state coordinators, Mrs Bunmi Adewakun, presented a paper on behalf of the organisation titled; ‘Addressing Teachers’ Shortages and Teachers’ Welfare Through Community Partnerships Towards Education Recovery’. The paper addresses the pressing issues of teacher shortages and inadequate welfare in Kano state, while proposing community partnerships as a sustainable solution for education recovery.
Overall the conference was a first step towards addressing the current problems surrounding the education system of Kano state and providing solutions to these problems. “All eyes on Kano state Government as they reposition and drive education recovery in the state”.
